DARLIE

I am not too sure where to even start with Darlie. I guess a great place would be for me to state my belief that Darlie is innocent of the crime for which she was convicted. After listening to the 911 tape and reading the transcripts and details of her case I became convinced that Darlie was a victim of the same crime that claimed her children. While this may shock many people, I suggest that whenever children are killed, there is a lot of pressure on the police to quickly bring closure to the matter and that parents are always looked upon as potential perpetrators. This ambition, compiled with the media attention can lead to wrongful arrests and convictions.

For example, Cameron Willingham was convicted of an arson fire that killed his children. Cameron was then sentenced to death by the state of TX. My friend Arnold who is on the row in TX knew Cameron and tells me that Cameron always maintained his claim of innocence until his eventual execution several years ago. In 2006, Samuel Millsap, the prosecutor of the Cameron Willingham case publicly stated that a mistake had been made in the Willingham case in that not only was Cameron innocent, but that no crime was even committed. The fire was determined to be accidental! Mr. Millsap stated that the arson theory used during the original investigation to determine that the fire was arson have been proven to be flawed and are no longer accepted as valid. Unfortunately, Cameron is now dead and TX still clings to its beliefs that it has never executed an innocent person. You can read about Mr. Millsap's statements here. My whole point is that Mr. Willingham first lost his children, then suffered the accusation of killing those children. His subsequent incarceration on TX death row, abandonment by those whom he loved, and eventual execution all happened because of a crime that he did not commit. Can you imagine what that would feel like to first lose your children and then be blamed and punished for the crime?

While Darlie has been through so much injustice, she still has a quiet nature and a gentle spirit. Darlie still has a belief that justice will be served and looks to the beauty in all things. Her relationships with her son Drake, her family, and her friends remind her that she is not alone, even though she has been sitting on death row for the past ten years. She is a beautiful woman both inside and outside who still looks to the day that she will be free.

On a personal note, I find Darlie to be funny and sweet and I am proud to call her a friend. She is a caring woman who loves her son Drake so much that she talks of every visit with him as if it were the first one. She cherishes her family who continue to stand by her side and dreams of the day that she will be released and never seems to give up hope. I appreciate the time that we share together and look forward to it continuing both while she is locked up and when she is finally released.
